Listening to:

Muse - Unintended [single] (2000)

So, Coldplay's new single is out... doesn't break any new ground, from what I've heard. Anyway, if I really wanted to listen to a true melancholic voice, I'd listen to Muse.

Whenever I hear anything from this British band, I'd think of NeLi, who introduced me to them with the one song, "Unintended". Sends shivers down the spine, this one. I kinda like the lyrics too...

You could be my unintended
Choice to live my life extended
You could be the one I’ll always love

You could be the one who listens
To my deepest inquisitions
You could be the one I’ll always love

ant tobe may want to check them out. ;)

Just downloaded the tab from UltimateGuitar.com, one of the better guitar tab archives on the Net. A first trial run on the Ovation sounds pretty good... maybe I'll go scare agent s. tonight with my demo version of "Unintended", hahaha. :X

Listening to: Feeder - Tumble And Fall

After a month-long break from the cinema, shucks caught a movie on the last day before the cinema ticket price hike:

Millions (2005)

This is not a Working Title film, but a British one nevertheless. The story could not be any simpler: Seven-year-old Damian (played by nine-year-old Alex Etel) is a quiet little boy whose mum has recently passed away. Together with his dad and brother, they move to a new home to start a new life.

Damian is a peculiar kid. He has a very rich imagination and seems to be forever talking to angels and saints (complete with halo, no less), who appear in the film as well. One day, something literally falls from the sky and changes his life irrevocably: a quarter of a million pounds in cash.

He quickly informs his big brother Anthony about it, who has a million ideas on how to spend it. The personality contrasts between the siblings is very evident from the way they try to spread their new-found wealth around.

A major premise in the story is that the UK is going to switch its legal tender currency to the euro in a week's time, so everyone is getting rid of their pound notes. This is how Damian came in contact with the money in the first place -  it was stolen off a train by robbers, who hilariously escape by blending in at a Newcastle United vs Arsenal football match! Haha. :P

As the film progressed, I found myself identifying more with Anthony (Lewis McGibbon), who tells Damian to keep the money a secret from their dad ("'cos of the tax") and even considers buying property! On the other hand, Damian is impossibly simple-minded and innocent... well, but of course, he's just a small boy. Heheh.

With slickly filmed scenes (the train robbery sequence being a standout example) and a very good Britpop soundtrack featuring Feeder and Muse, Millions is funny, sweet, and with an underlying moral to the story. Recommended. (y)

Trivia: Millions is a British film, but its UK release date is still three weeks away.

Lester's rating: 4/5 stars!

Listening to: Jamie Cullum - High And Dry

I've decided that I don't wanna go clubbing anymore. Those heady days of bopping in a group, standing in a circle, protecting drunk female friends from lechers, getting the dry ice treatment... those days are gone.

The only thing I'll miss is the Long Island Tea. Man, it really had one helluva kick.

But I can't stand the thought of being in an enclosed area with under-21s, all dressed in low slung jeans and trucker caps, with 50 Cent or Usher or some random R & B mediocrity blasting my ears off.

Maybe I'm getting advanced in age, haha.

The Paulaner Bräuhaus trip with the cousins has been planned... somehow, nursing beers without fear of getting them knocked out ofyour hand by some flailing arm or of getting cigarette burns on your arm/shirt/face seems much more enticing these days.

According to juthepoo, Thumper has a minimum entry age for guys of 26. What the heck.

To end off this quite serious (by my standards, hur hur) entry, I'm reading this book in my idle hours:

Melissa Rossi - What Every American Should Know About The Rest Of The World (2003)

World history made simple, and more importantly, witty. Shall talk more about this after I finish reading.

Listening to: Toto - I'll Be Over You

And so she finally got the call. Thank goodness, haha. :)

So what am I gonna do? Hmmmm.

Just six weeks. Will they want me?

I guess it would be kinda fun again. Not exactly the same experience of course, but the same coffeeshops for lunch, the yummy $1 mee siam from the canteen vendor who calls you "player", the drinks stall uncle who shows you how the dispensing machine really works, machiatto, oatmeal cookies, cheap magazines...

Something to think about, indeed.

Listening to: Better Than Ezra - At The Stars (acoustic)

This one is on food.

Here is rie's recipe for fried ebi (prawn):

Looks yummy, doesn't it? Courtesy pix from her as well. Thanks rie :)

But yes, the infection is spreading indeed. fur has gone bonkers over those things as well!

Anyways, I had some really good food with Dad this evening:

Clockwise from top left: fresh sotong (squid), tau kwa (fried beancurd), lou ark (soy sauce duck; yes we eat this a lot haha), fishcake, and fried cabbage. Just the two of us polished off all these plus one more dish of bah nerng (fried egg with meat), and four bowls of porridge and rice.

Ah yes - Teochew fare is definitely one of my favourites. :)

Oasis - MTV Unplugged (1996)... Noel on his beautiful Takamine acous-electric

I'm finding that my posts turn out somehow disjointed a lot of the time, so I'll try to find some common theme in each entry lah.

So this one is on the media. Hoho, how's that for a general theme. ;)

In today's papers, the lead story in the Home section told a very old tale: young girl meets older man on an Internet chatroom, they have sex on the first date. Girl tells teacher about it, teacher tells parents, parents tell cops, older man jailed eight months.

I was quite surprised by this story, even though it's an old tale. You see, the pair met on Alamak chat! Sia lah! Damn old-school lah, haha. Alamak chat was around before the days of IRC! And it is indeed surprising to see that it's still around... but dunno for how long, after this bad publicity hmmm.

In the latest issue of a local weekly magazine, radio deejays Glenn and the FD go shopping at Carrefour (this kind of thing also can make story, lol). But anyway, they showed their receptive receipts after the shopping trip... and this is Glenn's:

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this week's edition of TMI! Too Much Information. :S

For those of you kaypohs who want to see the full receipt (and FD's too) click here.

Finally, Jolin Tsai's latest album is out. Luckily most retailers shelve their Asian CDs under "Asian Pop", and not "Rock", "Pop" and the like. Otherwise they would most certainly create an "Others" section just for Jolin. A couple of dance tracks, a few gek R & B tracks, a few ballads... ta-dah, the latest Jolin album. Oh, and no Jay Chou compositions!

She seems to have put on some weight since her breakup with Jay.

agent s: " maybe she gorged herself silly."

Jolin: "Omg, I have got to cut down on those potato chips and chocolate bars."

For those of you with cable, please try to catch her latest video: she's wearing a beret, knee high black socks, and dancing with some backup dancers with a CGI screen as a backdrop.

Yes, it's the same concept, as her last 20 videos!

But there is still hope for the Chinese music industry though. More on that in a later entry.

Am I really naggy? It's bad enough that you may think so, but when your friends think so too... (w)

Anyway, gosh they're back!

New Order - Waiting For The Sirens' Call (2005)

For those kids out there, these are the guys who gave you "Bizarre Love Triangle", something you still hear at Zouk on Wednesdays even though the song is at least 20 years old. Hahaha.

Must get the album somehow. (y)
